The illustrious history of the House of Esterházy traces back to the 13th century, and it was officially established by Emperor Leopold I in 1687. The magnificent Esterházy palace in Eisenstadt, a masterpiece of baroque architecture designed by the renowned Italian architect Carlone, was completed in 1683. The Esterházy princes were not only known for their high level of education and patronage of arts, music, and science but also for their grand royal household, leaving a lasting impression on illustrious guests like Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
Empress Maria Theresia held a particular fondness for the wine produced in the mild climate around the lake and refined in the cellars of Esterházy.
