Description
DueMani Altrovino – Merlot e Cabernet Franc
*From organically/ biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification*
The name DueMani represents two hands from two people, Elena Celli and Luca D’Attoma. Elena was born and lives in Lucca. She studied marketing at Polimoda in Florence and worked in the fashion industry for many years. Luca was born in Borgo San Lorenzo, outside of Florence. A famous winemaker, he founded a winemaking and viticultural consulting company in 1991 called Wine Evolution Consulting (W.E.C.) through which he collaborates with wineries from various regions of Italy as well as Spain and Switzerland for the production of high quality wines. Luca’s most known credit is probably consulting for the Super Tuscan powerhouse Le Macchiole for over 25 years. During his time at Le Macchiole he created two of Italy’s most famous wines the Messorio Merlot and Paleo Syrah.
The Altrovino cuvée consists of 50% Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines are grown in calcareous soil, which is rich in clay. Manual harvest and a first selection are applied in the vineyard and gentle destemming is used to avoid crushing the berries. A second selection then occurs on the sorting table. Both varietals are fermented separately and spontaneously in cement tanks with regulated temperature. Pump over follows regularly as well as twenty days of contact with the skins. Parts of the Cabernet Francs ferment in 500l and 600l amphorae to bring out the floral and fruity aromas. This is followed by the blending of the two grape varieties with subsequent maturation in conical oak barrels for a further six months.
Critical Acclaim
RP95 Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“Tasted as an unfinished wine, the 2019 Merlot Cabernet Franc Altrovino is a blend that is assembled immediately after the harvest and fermented in cement and terracotta. Future vintages will probably see more terracotta, as winemaker Luca D’Attoma is moving in this direction, especially as this material will give the wine an edge when it comes to aging, he says. The bouquet delivers some minty tones and eucalyptus essence on top of dark cherry and blackberry. There is a lot of concentration and fruit weight in this bottle, with a blast of pretty freshness on the close.”
