Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a historic village located between Orange and Avignon, at the Mediterranean end of France’s southern Rhône Valley. This classic region is famous for powerful, full-bodied red wines, largely made from the “Holy Trinity” of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, among a myriad of other allowed grapes. With these three varieties behind the vast majority of the appellation’s red wines, there’s ample diversity across a broad range of styles and profiles. However, a total of eighteen red and white grape varieties are approved for use, further expanding the amazing spectrum of possible wines. Grenache is the principle variety of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, being well-suited to the terroir and climate: think juicy and savory wines with jammy red-fruit and black-cherry flavors and no shortage of alcohol. It’s typically aged in either vats or oak barrels for up to 18 months to create a rich and complex wine. But this is only the beginning…
“A blend of ripeness and freshness, favoring the ripe aspect, marks most of the wines of the 2019 vintage … The wines often display plenty of dark fruit character. While some can lean toward the ripe side, acidity levels are quite healthy, so richness and power are generally mitigated. In the 2019s, I have often found an interesting and appealing push/pull of depth and vivacity.”
