It seems like we all need to be enjoying more Melon de Bourgone but never get around to it. But why? This fantastically versitile and inexpensive white grape, native to the Pays Nantais in the western Loire Valley, is always dry and can be light and crisp or creamy if left on the lees while aging. Minerality is always apparent from the granite and chalky soils and fruit flavors range from lime and lemon to papaya and apple. It pairs perfectly with poached oysters, sauteed shrimp, lobster and cheese plates.
Domaines Landron is a certified Biodynamic and Organic producer in the region of Muscadet Sèvre et Maine in the western Loire Valley, France. Here winemaker Jo Landronhe produces several different styles of Melon de Bourgogne. His “Le Fief du Breil” is creamy with a round mouth feel from sur lie aging for 14 months before bottling. With notes of lemon preserves, green apples, smokey and minerality from the soil and bready/yeasty notes from sur lie, this is one wine that deserves a spot at your next wine dinner to impress friends and family.
