|||| $650 | 2019 Eisele Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Description

First planted to vines in the 1880s, Eisele Vineyard sits in the northeast Napa Valley, just east of Calistoga at the base of the Palisades Mountain range. Farmed organically since 1998 and biodynamically since 2000, the site has been principally dedicated to Cabernet Sauvignon for the last fifty years. Beginning with the inaugural release bearing the Eisele name in 1971, this iconic vineyard has received consistent recognition for possessing one of the great terroirs of Napa Valley. The wines invariably express the exceptional depth, elegance and longevity which are hallmarks of the Eisele Vineyard.

In 2013, the estate was sold to Francois Pinault’s Artemis Domaines group (who’s portfolio includes Château Latour). They fully understood the importance of carrying on the quality and standards that the estate had established, “As we continue to write the history of Eisele Vineyard, we build on the spirit of stewardship that defines its past. Our journey here is an exploration, a quest to understand this vineyard more deeply — its geologic construct, the variations in terroir, and the nature of its ancient soils. Changes, when considered, are only in service to letting the terroir speak more clearly. To this work, our experienced team brings creativity, curiosity, and an unflagging passion for excellence.”

“Deep purple-black in color, the nose of the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon slowly unfurls to reveal a gorgeous perfume of violets and roses over a core of kirsch, boysenberries and cassis, plus hints of redcurrant jelly and menthol, emerging into wafts of pencil lead and truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is built like a brick house, featuring very firm, wonderfully ripe, grainy tannins and bold freshness to support the vivacious, tightly wound black and red fruit layers, finishing long and mineral laced. It’s a stunning, evocative, singular wine that so beautifully captures the long, slow-maturing grace of the 2019 vintage. “This is the first complete expression of this vineyard, using all the dedicated blocks (to the west) for this label,” winemaker Helene Mingot mentioned. Indeed, coming up on eight years since the Pinault family purchased the estate, this 2019 has a compelling effortless harmony—a joy to taste!”

“This is sophisticated and intellectual, with an incredible wall of fine tannins that take you deep down into the soul of the wine. Full-to medium-bodied, tight and soulful. Tar, ash and volcanic-soil flavors. White pepper, too. Great length. Shows the first-growth quality of the vineyards, harking back to the wines of the mid-1970s. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. This needs at least six to seven years of bottle age. Best after 2028.”
