|| | $75 | Bodegas Muga Rioja Reserva MAGNUM

“The 2019 Reserva…comes from a dry and warm year with low yields and concentrated wines. The grapes from the Haro zone, the four from Rioja, Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Mazuelo and Graciano fermented destemmed and lightly crushed in oak vats with indigenous yeasts, and 80% of the volume matured in French oak and the rest in Centro European and American oak, 20% of them new, for 22 months, during which time the wine was racked every eight to nine months. This is serious and young but balanced, nuanced and complex. They are shortening the time in oak, as they feel they have better and younger barrels and think the wines need less time in oak and more time in bottle. This is very Muga, very Rioja and very good.”

94 points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Muga Reserva is Muga’s flagship wine, and the only red wine they produce vintage over vintage. This is one of Rioja’s most consistent cuvées qualitatively, as Muga declassifies all of their top vineyards, which in top vintages are reserved for Selección Especial, Prado Enea, Torre Muga, and Aro, into the Reserva in years when the top cuvées are not produced.

24 months in French (70%) and American (30%) oak barriques that are neutral. These barrels are produced from staves aged in the premises and coopered on the winery’s premises. Muga was the first winery in Spain to have an in-house cooperage. The wines are racked periodically throughout the ageing process to and fined with fresh egg whites (cracked by hand) before bottling. The wine is aged for a minimum of 12 months in bottle before release, but most vintages see further bottle ageing.
