SC | $73.98 | 2-Bottle CASE ~2019 Marcel Lapierre Morgon~

The Godfather of Beaujolais

Today, Marcel Lapierre’s philosophy seems absurdly simple and commonsense: harvest late from old vines, never using synthetic herbicides or pesticides, rigorously sorting to remove all but the healthiest grapes, adding minimal doses of sulfur dioxide or none at all. But for his time it was revolutionary. Sadly, the end of the 2010 vintage was Marcel’s last: he passed away at the end of the harvest—a poetic farewell for a man that forever changed our perception of Beaujolais. His son Mathieu and daughter Camille confidently continue the great work that their father pioneered, now introducing biodynamic vineyard practices and ensuring that Marcel’s legacy lives on.

Geography note: All Morgon is Beaujolais, but not all Beaujolais is Morgon. There are 10 named vineyard areas known as “Cru Beaujolais” that represent the top quality level for the region and which are allowed to put their names front-and-center on a label. Other Cru Beaujolais you might have seen: Moulin-à-Vent, Juliénas, Fleurie, Brouilly, among others.

The 2019 Lapierre Morgon is produced from 60 year-old Gamay vines grown in gravel and granite. This wine is extraordinarily intense, with ripe black-cherry and redcurrent, supported by refreshing acidity, a hint of violets, a slight gamey tone and grippy fruit tannins. This wine is allocated and rarely available in general release, a true once-a-year gem wine!
