A Masterful Barbera from a Piedmont Superstar: Giuseppe Mascarello
Winemaker: Mauro & Giuseppe Mascarello
The Mascarello family began estate-bottling in 1881. Today, their estate holds a monopoly of the great Monprivato vineyard, producing some of Barolo’s longest-lived and most complete wines from its soils.
The Mascarellos practice “natural” viticulture, and prune to limit yields. These estate-grown grapes are harvested from 60/70-year-old vines with low yields. All harvesting is by hand. No chemical pesticides or fertilizers are employed in the vineyards. Winemaking shows the utmost respect for tradition and the terroir – simple fermentations with the native yeasts, and long aging in large, neutral barrel.
The Scudetto vineyard (so-named because its’ shape is that of a shield. The Italian soccer championship is also called the Scudetto) is within the hamlet of Perno in Monforte d’Alba at 300m in elevation. Clayey-sandy, composed of brown clay and grey sand of marine origin, with the presence of pebbles and small fossilized particles.
Only 900 cases of this outstanding Barbera d’Alba are made, with a tiny quantity coming to North Carolina.
You’ll receive 2 bottles of the 2017 Giuseppe Mascarello Barbera d’Alba “Scudetto” for $79.99
