Ultra-Small Production, Howell Mountain Cabernet from Michael James
Ranging between 1700 & 1800 feet in elevation, the 32 acre Beatty Ranch sits above the fog and is at the heart of the Howell Mountain appellation. So much so that the Howell Mountain AVA came to be with the help of others and topographic maps of the area spread on Mr. Beatty’s dining table. The vineyard has a long history dating back to the 1880’s when William Keyes first began to establish vineyards on Howell Mountain. The primary source block for Michael James was planted on shallow, volcanic Aiken soils over 40 years ago making these some of the oldest cabernet sauvignon vines on Howell Mountain.
Tasting notes:Intense aromas of cassis, blackberry, and blond tobacco, with vanilla and maraschino cherry in the background. A hefty, yet well-rounded mouthfeel, with solid, round tannins; not tannic, but robust and even. The primary fruits follow through seamlessly on the palate, the finish is lengthy with secondary aromas of coffee, baking spices and black tea.
