A New Superstar: Pinea Ribera del Duero
17 by Pinea is a wine that almost never was. Originally created to be served exclusively at Pro Golfer Sergio Garcia’s wedding and without commercial release, the wine was such a resounding success that a public offering became absolutely necessary. Made from younger estate vines and an outstanding value compared to Pinea’s flagship Ribera de Duero (retails around $150!). Both wines are made by Isaac Fernandez, whom the Wine Spectator dubbed one of Spain’s brightest young winemakers. Isaac trained under his uncle Mariano Garcia, former head winemaker at Vega Sicilia and truly of the most iconic winemakers in Spain.
Made from 100% Tempranillo (known as Tinto Fino in this neck of the woods), 17 by Pinea has lifted aromatics and an elegant, supple body of fruit, a welcome departure from the more-aggressive, heavily extracted style the region is known for. The nose is regal and highly perfumed, expressing the classic fruit profile of Tempranillo with its own unique finesse very reminiscent of fine Burgundy. Black forest fruits, plum, and blueberry dominate with hints of light accents of vanilla, cacao nibs and cedar playing a supporting, background role. The palate broods with fresh plum and berry compote laced with high-toned red fruits. The wine has broad shoulders, but also soft edges with chalky tannins and a lively mineral acidity driving a long and supple finish.
