Exploring Australia & New Zealand

Australia may be the smallest continent but it’s the sixth largest country and only slightly smaller than the continental United States. A diverse nation with snow-capped mountains, arid deserts, sandy beaches and rainforests, only a small portion of the country is suitable for producing wine. Australia’s winegrowing regions are concentrated in a narrow strip of coast on the southern edge of the continent. Within this area some regions are truly coastal, and therefore suited for delicate varietals like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Other regions are further inland and better suited for hearty varieties like Shiraz.

 

New Zealand’s winemakers share their Australian counterparts’ affinity for intensity. However, being an almost exclusively coastal and high-latitude region, New Zealand’s intensity comes in a completely different form as that of Australia. By far, it has one of the coolest growing seasons of any major wine-producing region, allowing grapes to hang on the vine longer and ripen more slowly than any other region. This allows its famous Sauvignon Blanc wines to develop the intense aromas and flavors they are known for, all the while maintaining a high level of acid.
